Dental Crowns

 CEREC Same-Day Crowns
We now have a CEREC machine that does one visit crowns. No more impressions, temporaries, and multiple visits.
When a tooth has had a significant amount of work done, or if it has decayed to the point that its structural integrity has been compromised, having a crown placed is often a viable option for restoration. A traditional crown is a custom-made cap, made in a dental laboratory, that fits over your existing tooth. We now offer same-day crowns which, as the name implies, are made in our office and fitted on your tooth all in one visit! Same-day crowns are made possible thanks to computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).
Same-Day Crown Procedure
The process for receiving a same-day crown is very similar to the process for receiving a traditional crown but it is crafted in our office as soon as we take the impression of your tooth. The method for taking an impression of your teeth is different, in that instead of taking a putty mold of your tooth, we take a digital impression of it. This is accomplished by dusting your tooth with a reflective powder and scanning it with a handheld wand. Using this method we get an accurate 3D model of your tooth which we use to construct the same-day crown.
The construction of a same-day crown is done in our office. It is done by a machine that uses the 3D image of your tooth to carve a piece of ceramic material into the exact shape of your tooth. The color of the crown is closely matched to your surrounding teeth and is finished by staining and glazing it to ensure a great aesthetic and functional fit. The function and lifetime of traditional and same-day crowns are exactly the same. This means that the only trade-off you make when you receive a same-day crown as opposed to a traditional crown is not having to come back to our office!

Types of Traditional Dental CrownsThere are three main types of dental crowns available, and we'll help you choose the right one for your mouth:

All Porcelain: The all porcelain crown is one of the most aesthetically pleasing options, but it is generally only recommended for the front teeth. When placed on the rear teeth, the risk of fracture with these crowns will increase.

Gold: Gold crowns are extremely durable, and they are best suited for the back molars where they cannot be seen. Gold crowns are useful for people who clench or grind their teeth. Gold crowns tend to be most similar to your natural teeth, which will allow the tissue to quickly adapt to the restoration, and a minimal amount of your natural tooth structure will need to be removed to have the crown put into place.

Porcelain Fused to Metal: This type of crown will feature a metal base with porcelain attached to the outside, making the restoration more attractive than an entirely metal option. If you want the durability of a gold crown but what your tooth to look as natural as possible, this would be a great selection. Some risk does still exist regarding fractures, but in the event of a chip or break, it is usually just the outer porcelain portion that is damaged. |
The Dental Crown ProcedureIf you'll be getting a dental crown, you can plan on having two appointments to complete the process. At your first visit, the tooth will be prepared by removing decay, and the surface will be shaped so that it can fit the crown. We will take impressions of your teeth so that your customized crown can be created, and you'll likely wear a temporary restoration while we wait for your crown to be finished.
At your follow-up appointment, we'll take off your temporary crown and will carefully place the permanent one into place. We'll also ensure proper bite and spacing.
After your appointment, we'll encourage you to follow-up with us regularly. While proper oral hygiene is essential, you'll also need regular dental care to ensure that your crown is in the best possible shape.
